Stimson (HENRY LEWIS an American lawyer)

HENRY LEWIS, an American lawyer and public official, born in New York City, in 1867. He graduated from Yale, in 1888, and from the Harvard Law School in the following year. In 1891 he was admitted to the bar, becoming a member of the firm of Root & Clarke, in 1893, and a member of the firm of Winthrop & Stimson, from 1901. From 1906 to 1909 he was United States attorney for the Southern District of Nev New York, and was a Republican candidate for governor of New York, in 1910. He was Secretary of War in the cabinet of President Taft, from May, 1911, to March, 1913. During the World War he served in the law department of the United States Reserves, and was lieutenant-colonel of the 305th Field Artillery from August, 1917, to August, 1918, when he was appointed colonel of the 31st Field Artillery. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France, from December, 1917, to August, 1918.
