Stormy Petrel
in ornithology, the Procellaria pelagica, common in the North Atlantic. In general appearance it is not unlike a swift, of a sooty black color, with a little white on the wings, and some near the tail. It is popularly believed to be a harbinger of bad weather, and is called by sailors Mother Carey's Chicken, a name which is also applied to other species.
