The skin is covered with hair to a greater or less extent; tail very short , in some cases rudimentary. The family is divided into three well-marked groups or sub-families: Suinx, true (Sus, Potamochœrus, Babirusa, and and Porcula) Dicotylinæ (Peccaries, with the single genus D Dicotyles, often classed as a family); ; and Phacochœrinæ ( wart hogs, with one genus, Phacochœrus cochærus). The family probably com- Eocene Tertiary.
