the sun god of Hindu mythology.

Susa

a town of Northern Italy, on a tributary of the Po, at the foot of the Cottian Alps, 32 miles W. of Turin. It has a cathedral (1029), and a triumphal arch erected by the Romanized Sugusian chief to Augustus in 8 B. C. The people grow fruit and grapes, and carry on iron, leather, and silk industries.

Susitna Valley

the principal watershed of the river of the same name, an affluent of Cook Inlet, Alaska. Area, about 8,000 square miles. The timber resources of the region are of importance and certain sections of it are also well suited for agriculture and stock raising.

Part of the government railway between Cook Inlet and Fairbanks traverses the region.

Suspecta

in zoölogy, a sub-section of colubrine snakes, having the fangs situated at the back of the jaw behind the common teeth. Head usually covered with shield-like plates. Some are known to be harmless, others are reputed poisonous, though it is doubtful if they really are so. Families Homalopsidæ, Dipsadidæ, and Dendrophidæ.

Suspended Animation

the temporary cessation of the outward signs and of some of the functions of life.

Suspension Railway

a railway in which the carriage is suspended from SUSSEX side of a single track, so as to balance, or suspended between two tracks.

Sutler

a person who follows an army and sells to the troops provisions, liquors, or the like. The sutlers attached to regiments in the French army are called called vivandiers.

a river in southern Georgia, in the Okefinokee Swamp, which flows in a winding, generally S.

S. W. course through Florida into the Gulf of Mexico.

Suwarrow Islands

a group of three low wooded islands in the Pacific, about 450 miles N. N. W. of Cook or Hervey Islands, and about the same distance E. of Samoa. Annexed to Great Britain in 1889. Pop. about 120.

Suzerain

in feudalism, a lord paramount; either the king, as original holder of the realm, or his immediate vassals, as grantors in turn to subvassals.

Svendsen

JOHAN SEVERIN, a Swedish composer; born in Christiania, Norway, Sept. 30, 1840. He studied at Leipsic, Paris, and in Italy, conducted concerts in his native town and in 1883 became master of the Chapel Royal, Copenhagen. His works comprise symphonies, an overture, and quartets, quintets, and concertos for strings.

Swallow Shrike

in ornithology, a popular name for any individual of the family Artamidæ. They resemble swallows in their actions and general mode of life, while in the shape of their bills they exhibit great affinities to some of the shrikes and crow shrikes.
