Truce
a suspension of arms by agreement of the commanders of oppos- TRUE ing armies; a temporary cessation of nostilities, either for negotiation or other purpose. The truce of God was a suspension of arms which occasionally took place in the Middle Ages, and was introduced by the Church in order to mitigate the evils of private war. This truce provided that private feuds should cease at least on the holidays from Thursday evening to Sunday evening each week, during the season of Advent and Lent, and on the octaves of the great festivals.
