Wetmore
GEORGE PEABODY, a United States Senator from Rhode Island, born at London, England, in 1846. He graduated from Yale in 1867, and from the Columbia Law School in 1869. In the same year he was admitted to the bar. He was trustee of the Peabody Museum of Natural History of Yale, and of the Peabody Educational Fund. In 1885-1886, and again in 1886- 1887, he was governor of Rhode Island.
He was defeated for a third term in the latter year, and was defeated for the United States Senate in 1889. He was, however, elected to that office in 1895, and was re-elected in 1900 and 1906.
