Lenitive Electuary
The mode of preparing this electuary is the following:
Take of the best senna leaves, reduced to a FOMENTATIONS-ALTERATIVES-EMETICS. ine powder, 4 ounces; pulp of prunes, 1 out producing any sensible evacuation by pound; pulp of cassia, + pound; pulp of tam- perspiration, vomiting, or purging. The prearinds, 3 ounces; molasses, 1½ pints; essential parations of mercury and iodine, when prooil of caraway, 2 drachms. Boil the pulps perly administered, are among the most with the molasses to the consistence of honey, useful and generally employed alteratives. add the senna, and when the mixture is 5162. Alterative Pills. Lobelia seeds, nearly cold, add the oil of caraway, and, 2 drachms; mandrake, 2 drachms; blue flag, lastly, mix the compound thoroughly. This 2 drachms; blood root, 2 drachms; cayenne preparation is a mild aperient, suited to consti- pepper, 1 drachm; gum guiacum, 2 drachms; pation from whatever cause. It is admir- extract of dandelion, 6 drachms; oil of pepably suited to children and delicate persons. United with an equal quantity of flowers of sulphur, it is an admirable remedy for piles.
Dose, from 1 to 3 tea-spoonfuls at bed-time. omentations. In domestic permint, 3 or 4 drops; simple syrup to form into pills. Dose, 2 pills twice or thrice a day.
These pills are of great service in bilious and liver complaints, diseased joints, boils, carbuncles, cutaneous eruptions, scrofula, syphilis, &c.
