The Chemical Barometer, or shells are treated
This method is applied to Storm Glass. Take a long narrow bottle, many other objects; all that is wanted being such as an old-fashioned eau-de-Cologne bot- a liquid dissolving the material to be acted tle, and put into it 2½ drachms of camphor and 11 drachms of spirit of wine; when the camphor is dissolved, which it will readily do by slight agitation, add the following mixture:
Take water, 9 drachms; nitrate of potassa the lye over the shells, and boil them 6 or 7 (saltpetre), 38 grains; and muriate of ammo- hours, or longer if they are large; then soak, nia (sal ammoniac), 38 grains. Dissolve these and wash often in fresh water. upon, and a varnish to protect some parts from its action.
