Hose
The hose or socket is that part of the head of an iron club into which the shaft is fitted.
Haunches
The fleshy part of a horse's back at the junction of body and hips.
Hip
The top joint of the hind-leg, at the junction with the pelvis.
Hock
The backward-bending joint on the hind-legs, formed by the junction of the shank, or cannon bone, and the bone of the upper leg, or tibia.
Hand-traverse
- Traversing by means of handholds only.

Hogsback
A long, narrow ridge.
Hot plate. A surface of rock, exposed by the breaking away of a glacier.
Half-outrigged
- A boat in which the outriggers (q.v.) are considerably short of their usual length.

Hang
A momentary hesitation after the forward swing is completed and before dropping the blade into the water.
Hoick
A jerk with the arms at the beginning or end of the stroke, which prevents a steady leg drive from the stretcher.
Hold
To stop the progress of the boat by dropping the oar blades flat into the water and opposing the resistance of the shank of the oar.
Hurry
To swing the body forward more rapidly than the stroke oar, and to get the blade into the water before him.
