Res

Rearing
To stand erect, or to attempt to stand upon the hind-legs.
Roller-bolts
The four protuberances on the splinter-bar over which the loops of the traces of horses in double harness are slipped.
Roughing.-Altering a horse's shoe in slippery weather in order to give it a firmer hold of the ground.
Ramage Hawk
- Sometimes used for a hawk in its first year. Equivalent to Soar-hawk.
Rangle
Small stones given to a hawk to aid digestion.

Red Plumage
- The colouring of the young bird as contrasted with the blue of the adult.
Hence Red Hawk.
Ring (of the hawk). -To mount in wide spiral circles.
Rouse (of the hawk).- To shake its feathers.
Ruff (of the hawk). - To strike the game without seizing it.
Rye
Old term for a cold in the head of the hawk. Also called Snurt. (Obs.)
Randan
A boat with three seats for rowers.
A sculler sits amidships with a pair of sculls, bow and stroke having each an oar.
Reach Forward
- The outstretching of arms and the bending forward of body necessary in order to get the blade into the water as far behind the rigger as possible.
Recovery
Includes (i) the action of the wrists in disengaging the oar from the water and in turning the oar on to the feather; (ii.) the straightening of the arms; (iii.) the commence- ROWING] ment of the swing up of the body, after the conclusion of the stroke. Rigger.-[See OUTRIGGER.]
Roll
Of the boat or any member of the crew; to swing from side to side during or between the strokes.
