Dickens's last spoken words were, "Yes' on the ground," in reply to the words of his sister-in-law-, when he was stricken at the last, she having exclaimed, "Come and lie down," Of his own life and work he once said: "I rest my claim to the remembrance of my country on my published works," as a reason why he desired no laudatory inscription over his grave.
