Baritone
A brass instrument; a clarionet of low pitch; an obsolete variety of the viol family; the male voice ranging between bass and tenor (also written barytone); the F clef on the third line (not used now).

2026 Editor's Note: While the page identifies the baritone as a voice between bass and tenor, the specific classification of bass-baritone only emerged in the late 19th century to describe demanding Wagnerian roles like Wotan. The term itself is derived from the Greek βαρύτονος (barýtonos) , meaning "low sounding." Beyond the vocal range, the name also applies to the baritone saxophone , a brass-bodied instrument invented by Adolphe Sax around 1840. (Ed: GG 2026-08-08)
