Oblique Motion
When one part is stationary while the other ascends or descends. Oboe (It.) (o-bo-eh), plural, oboi (o-bo-ee); (Fr.) Hautbois (ho-boa); (Eng.) Hautboy or Hoboy [from the French word which means, literally, "high-wood"]. A wind instrument with double reed, formerly the leading instrument in the orchestra, filling the place now taken by the violins. A pair are generally employed in the modern orchestra. The oboe is one of the most ancient and widely disseminated of musical instruments. It is the general opinion of students of antiquity that many of the instruments called by the general name "flute" by the Greeks were oboi.
