Position
(I) Of chords. The common chord may be written in three positions, called the octave, tierce, and quint. 9:
Octave.
Tierce. 3 Quint.
As given in this example it is called the close position of the chord; the following example is called the open position :- 9: (2) On instruments of the violin and guitar family, "Position" refers to the part of the fingerboard on which the left hand is placed.
