Pralltriller (Ger.), M Played. now commonly called the Mordent. The sign for the mordent proper is MV.

It always means that the auxiliary note is to be below the principal. When the line that crosses the sign was omitted it was called the Inverted Mordent or Pralltriller. The original form of the mordent is never used by modern writers.
