Singspiel (Ger.) (sing-speel)

"Sing-play."

Operetta; an opera without recitatives, the dialogue being spoken. "Der Freischütz," when first produced. was of this character, which may be considered as one of Germany's contributions to the development of the opera, the Italian operas from the beginning being largely composed of recitative. The "Singspiel" form has found its most congenial home and its best exponents in France.
