Those in which the tone is produced by the vibration of strings.

They are classified as follows: Ist, strings plucked by the fingers-harp, guitar, etc.; 2d, strings struck by plectra - mandolin, zither, etc.; 3d, strings vibrated by means of a bow-violin, etc.; 4th, strings struck with hammers-pianoforte, dulcimer, etc.
