Tenor, Tenore (It.), Taille or Ténor (Fr.). (I) The highest natural male voice. (2) In the old system of music, the cantus or plain song. (3) A common name for the viola. The word tenor is supposed to be derived from Lat., teneo, to hold, as it held the melody.
