Marriage and Divorce

Any two persons may marry, with these exceptions: Idiots, lunatics, persons of unsound mind, persons related by blood or affinity, within certain degrees forbidden by law, persons under the age of consent, which varies in different States, and all. persons not legally divorced.

In some States it is impossible to procure divorce, except for grave reason. In New York State absolute divorce can be obtained only for adultery. Limited divorce is granted for the following reasons: Idiocy or lunacy, consent of either party having been obtained by force, duress or fraud; want of age or physical incapacity; the former husband or wife of either being still alive; cruel treatment, abandonment, neglect or failure on the part of the husband to provide for his wife; such conduct on the part of the defendant as would render it unsafe for the plaintiff to cohabit with said defendant.

In some of the States very slight causes, and a brief residence in said States,, will obtain the desired decree.
