Measures and Weights (French metrical system)

The French metrical system of measures and weights with German names has been in force since 1872.

Length. The stab = 1 metre = 39.37 Imp. inches. The new zoll = 1 centimetre. The kette = 1 decametre. The meile or mile = 7500 metres, or 8202 Imp. yards. Surface. The quadratstab = 1 square metre; the ar = 1 are; and the hektar = 1 hecktare = 2.471 Imp. acres.

Capacity. The fass corn measure = 1 hectolitre or 2.751 or nearly 23/4 Imp. bushels; and the scheffel = 1/2 hectolitre, or about 1 Imp. bushel 1½ pecks. The kanne = 1 litre = 1.7608 or about 13/4 Imp. pint. The schoppen = 1/2 The kubikstab = I cubic metre. litre.

Weight. The half-kilo pound = 500 grammes = 1.1023 lbs. or.about 1 lb. 134 oz. avoirdupois. The half-kilo pound is divided into 10 neuloth of 10 quint of 10 demigrammes (5 grammes) each. The centner or cwt., being 100 of these pounds, is equal to 1 half-quintal metreque = 3 qr. 26 lbs. 334 oz., or 110 lbs. avoirdupois. =

The measures of capacity and length vary, but the divisions of the latter are generally the same, namely, the ruthe = 2 clafters 6 ells, 12 feet, or 144 inches; the Rhineland or land-surveyor's foot = 12.36 Imp. inches; the geographical mile 8101 Imp. yards, or 4.60 Imp. miles; the long mile = 10126 Imp. yards; the short mile = 6859 Imp. yards. The Rhineland morgen = 10185 Imp. sq. yards, or 43/4 Rhineland morgens = 10 Imp. acres nearly. The commercial pound contains 2 marks, 16 ounces, 32 loths, 128 quentins, 312 pfennings, or 1024 hellers; the apoth- 5527 troy ecaries' pound of 12 ounces, 96 drams, 288 scruples, or 5760 grains grains; the carat for jewels = 3.171 troy grains. Gold and silver are weighed by the Colonge mark of 8 ounces, 16 loths, 64 quentins, 256 pfennings, 512 hellers, or 4352 eschen = 3608 troy grains: the fineness of gold is expressed by dividing the mark fine or other weight into 24 carats, each of 12 grains; the fineness of silver, by dividing the mark fine into 16 loths, each of 18 grains ; in both cases the mark fine containing 288 grains. Accounts are stated in drachmi of 100 lepta of the same value as the French franc, but the chief medium of circulation at present is an inconvertible paper currency.
