These are the same as in Britain, except the measures of capacity, which continue to be those used in England prior to the introduction of the Imperial System. Commodities formerly sold by the hundredweight, however, are now, with few exceptions, currently sold by the 100 lbs., in some of the States termed a quintal. The barrel of flour contains 5 Winchester bushels of wheat, and weighs 196 lbs. net. The barrel of Indian corn contains 31/8 Winchester bushels, each bushel weighing about 57 lbs. The hogshead of Indian meal contains 800 lbs.; the barrel of pickled beef or pork, 200 lbs. BA dgile In New York and Philadelphia, the spring and fall, when the country buyers arrive or give their orders, are distinguished as the trade seasons. The spring trade begins in January, and terminates about the first of May; in Philadelphia, however, it commences for the western trade about one month earlier. The fall trade begins both in New York and in Philadelphia on the ist August, and closes towards the commencement of November. least one week before it commences.
