Ceres, the goddess of corn and harvests, was daughter of Saturn and Vesta. She was the mother of Proserpine, who was carried away by Pluto while she was gathering flowers. Charon. A god of the infernal regions, son of Nox and Erebus, who conducted the souls of the dead in a boat over the rivers Styx and Acheron. Chelone. A nymph changed into a tortoise by Mercury, and condemned to perpetual silence for having ridiculed Jupiter and Juno. Chimæra. A celebrated monster which continually vomited flames. It was destroyed by Bellerophon. Chiron. A centaur, half a man and half a horse, son of Philyra and Saturn. He was famous for his knowledge of music, medicine, and shooting, and taught mankind the use of plants and medicinal herbs.
Circe. A daughter of Sol and Perseis, celebrated for her knowledge of magic and venomous herbs.
