Corinthiacus Isthmus

Often called simply the Isthmus, lay between the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs, and connected the Peloponnesus with the mainland, or Hellas proper. In its narrowest part it was forty stadia, or five Roman miles across. Four unsuccessful attempts were made to dig a canal across the Isthmus, namely, by Demetrius Poliorcetes, Julius Caesar, Caligula, and Nero.
