Barnard, Frederick A. P.

Frederick A. P. (1809-1889), an American educator. He was a native of Sheffield, Massachusetts, and a graduate of Yale College. From 1854 until 1861 he was connected with the University of Mississippi, but resigned at the breaking out of the Civil War. He was president of Columbia College, now University, New York, 1864-88. Barnard College for women, an affiliated school of the university, was established in accordance with his plans and was named in his honor.
