Charon's Staircase

in the Greek theater, steps which led from the middle of the stage to the orchestra or dancing place, which corresponds to the pit in modern theaters. In plays in which a ghost appeared, it reached the stage by way of these steps, whence the name, Charon's staircase. See Charon; Theater
