Crockett, David

David (1786-1836), an American pioneer and politician. He was born at Limestone, Tennessee, August 17, 1786. He was killed at the defense of the Alamo at San Antonio, Texas, March 6, 1836. He was a member of Congress from Tennessee from 1827-33, and held a command in the Texan War of 1835-6. He was famous among frontiersmen as an unfailing shot. Allusions to Crockett's coon have their origin in a story that found its way to the halls of Congress. Having treed a coon one day, Crockett was about to take aim, when the coon called out, "Don't shoot, Colonel, I'll come down; I'm a gone coon." See Alamo
