Field, Cyrus

Cyrus (1819-1892), the American promoter of the Atlantic cable. He was a native of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Having acquired wealth as a New York Merchant, he turned his attention to the project of laying an Atlantic cable. He obtained a charter, giving him the exclusive right to land on the coast of New-foundland for a period of fifteen years.
