Iguana

i-gwa'na, a large lizard of tropical America. The throat has a large dewlap and the back is covered with a spiny ridge. It is an arboreal animal and spends much of its time sleeping in the sun. It is entirely harmless, feeding chiefly on fruit or other vegetable matter. It is from three to five feet in length, over half of which, however, is tail. The natives take it by means of a noose attached to a pole. They value its flesh highly for food. Iguana steaks are sold in the Panama markets and are served in the restaurants. They are said to be tender and to have the taste of fried chicken. See Horned Toad; Lizard
