La Farge, John

John (1835-), an American artist. He was born in New York City. He was educated for the law, but took William Hunt for a master and studied Japanese art. His most celebrated work is the Battle Window in Memorial Hall, Harvard. He painted altarpieces for St. Peter's and for the Church of the Ascension, both of New York. He decorated Trinity Church and the chancel of St. Thomas' Church, Boston. His reputation is that of a master of color, but not of composition.
