Litany

lit'a-ny, a solemn prayer of supplication, a responsive prayer used as a part of a service. In one sense of the word, any set prayer, as the Lord's Prayer, when used in a service, is a litany. Litanies form an important part of the services in the Greek, the English, and the Roman Catholic churches. The chief litanies of the last named are three, the Litany of the Saints, the Litany of the Blessed Virgin, and the Litany of the Most Holy Name of Jesus.
