Poussin, Nicholas

poos-sang', Nicholas (1593-1665), a noted French painter of historical and landscape pictures. A native of Normandy. He was educated at Paris. The Deluge, painted for Cardinal Richelieu, hangs in the Louvre with many of his best works, "admired rather as a duty than enjoyed by the spectator."
