res, Jacob Augustus (1849-), an American author and social reformer. He was born in Denmark, but came to the United States in 1869. He worked at several trades and finally became a reporter on the New York Sun. He has done much as a lecturer and writer to arouse interest in conditions in the slums of New York. His works include How the Other Half Lives, The Children of the Poor, The Making of an American, Nibsy's Christmas, and Children of the Tenements.
