Snowline

the limit above which a mountain is covered with snow the year around. It is well known that the air grows cooler the greater the altitude. The snowline is reached as soon as the air is too cool to melt the snow. The snow limit varies under different conditions. It is higher at the equator than in a temperate clime, and is lowest, of course, in the Arctic regions. In the Andes of the equator the snowline lies at an altitude of 16,000 feet. In the Alps it is from 8,000 to 9,000 feet above sea level.
