Tauchnitz, Christian Bernhard

Christian Bernhard (1816-1895), a noted German publisher. In 1837 he founded a publishing house in Leipsic. The particular feature of the house was A collection of British and German authors, known generally as the Tauchnitz edition. These volumes are printed with the utmost care on excellent paper. They are bound in paper covers in a manner superior to the ordinary dime novel, and are sold at the uniform price of a mark-about twenty-four cents. In 1910 the number of volumes in the series was not far from 4,000. Tauchnitz's success as a publisher and standing in the business world was such that he received several government appointments. He was consul-general for Great Britain in the kingdom of Saxony and was created a hereditary noble by his sovereign.
