Tauchnitz, Karl

Karl (1761-1834), a German printer and bookseller. He was an uncle of Tauchnitz, the publisher. In 1797 Karl Tauchnitz set up a printing shop at Leipsic. A year later he added a book stall, and in 1800 he began the manufacture of type. He printed editions of the Bible and of the Koran and a series of Greek and Latin classics noted for the correctness and beauty of the text. Karl Tauchnitz was the first to introduce stereotyping into Germany.
