Thymol

tim'ol, in chemistry, a substance prepared from oil of thyme. It is known also as thyme camphor. The name is a compound of thyme and oil. Thymol looks like camphor and has the properties of carbolic acid. It is almost insoluble in water, but is soluble in alcohol and melts readily. Thymol is used in the dressing of wounds, as an antiseptic, and as a disinfectant. The drug has acquired recent importance as a remedy for the hookworm disease. Like carbolic acid, it is a poison and should be taken under the advice of a physician.
