Anderson (ROBERT an American military)

ROBERT, an American military officer, noted for his defense of Fort Sumter, where the first gun was fired in the Civil War. He was born near Louisville, Ky., June 14, 1805; was graduated at West Point, and served in ANDERSON the Black Hawk, Seminole, and Mexican Wars. He was promoted major in 1857; took command of the troops in Charles- Wars. He was promoted major in 1857; took command of the troops in Charleston harbor in November, 1860; removed his forces from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter, Dec. 26; was invested there by the Confederates who bombarded the fort April 12-13, 1861; and evacuated the fort April 14. He was promoted Brigadier-General in 1861, and was retired in 1863, with the rank of brevet Major- General. He died in Nice, France, Oct 27, 1871.
