Boas
FRANZ (bō'az), a German ethnologist, born in Minden, Westphalia, July 9, 1858; studied at Heidelberg, Bonn, and Kiel Universities, in 1877- 1882; traveled in the Arctic regions in 1883-1884; was assistant in the Royal Ethnographical Museum in Berlin, and privat docent in geography at the University in 1885-1886; and teacher of anthropology in Clark University, Worcester, Mass., in 1888-1892; Columbia, 1899-1901; curator American Museum Natural History, 1907-1908; President American Anthropological Society, 1910, and N. Y. Academy of Science. He spent much time among various American Indian tribes, and, among other works, has published "Baffin Land" (1885); "The Central Eskimo" (1888); "Indians of British Columbia" (1888-1892); "Mind of Primitive Man" (1911).
