Brontides
a generic name proposed nds (Italian: bronfor the mysterious sounds (Italian: bron- (Italian tidi) resembling distant thunder or cannon and occurring in many parts of the world. They were first known widely as Barisal Guns, from Barisal, India, where they were of frequent occurrence.
In Belgium they are known as mistpoeffers and in Australia as desert sounds. In America their principal place of occurrence has been the vicinity of Moodus, Conn. (named by the Indians "place of noises"), whence they are known as Moodus sounds. They have been ascribed to various causes, chiefly subterranean.

The 1921 census returns gave the population of Canada as 8,772,631, an increase of almost 22 per cent over the population in 1911.
