SMITH W. destructiveness. A new national campaign against the pest was inaugurated at the boll weevil conference in Atlanta, Ga., February, 1922, when a $2,500,000 corporation was organized to carry on a five-year scientific war.

He BOYDEN, ROLAND W., American lawyer and financier, was born at Beverly, Mass., October 18, 1863. He graduated from Harvard College, 1885, and from the Law School, 1888, being admitted to the bar the same year. He same year. practiced law in the city of Boston, and was also president of the Beverly Savings Bank. By appointment of President Wilson he became American representative on the Reparation Commission under the Treaty of Versailles, but was afterward withdrawn when the Senate failed to ratify the treaty. In May, 1921, he was reappointed by President Harding to sit on the Commission as unofficial observer.

BRAZIL. In April, 1922, Dr. Arthur Bernardes was elected President after a closely disputed contest leading for a time to a critical situation. He was the candidate of the civil party as against the military elements of the country.

On September 6, 1922 an international exposition was opened at Rio de Janeiro to commemorate the first centenary of Brazilian independence.

The United States was represented by Secretary Hughes. In plans to strengthen the Brazilian navy, an arrangement has been made with the United States by which a number of American naval officers will serve as advisers for a period of four years. (Population figures): A synopsis of the census of September 1, 1920, issued in May, 1922, places the total population of Brazil at 30,635,605.
