Brookhart (SMITH W United States Senator)

SMITH W., United States Senator from Iowa, was born in Scotland County, Missouri, February 2, 1869. He received his early education in the district schools, afterwards graduating from the Bloomfield, Iowa, High Blo Bloomfield , Iowa, High School and the Southern Iowa Normal School. He was a teacher for a time law-offices. He later practiced law, having studied at home and in various law-offices. He various law-offices. served in the Spanish-American War, on the Mexican border, and in the World War. In 1920 he made a strong run for BULGARIA the Republican nomination to the U. S.

Senate on a platform of opposition to the Esch-Cummins Railway Act, and in 1922 gained the nomination and was elected by a large majority in spite of the opposition of many party leaders.

BULGARIA. Following the World War the management of affairs was mostly in the hands of the agrarian party, with bitter opposition on the part of the bourgeois elements in the cities, particularly in Sofia. Conditions unfavorable to the economic restoration of the country led in 1922 to a demand from the Reparation Commission for control of the national resources and revenues in return for a three years' postponement of reparations payments, but Bulgaria refused to comply with the demand. A conscript labor law, adopted July 13, 1921, made all men between the ages of 20 and 50 and women between 16 and 50 liable to take part pa in public work for a certain period every CALORIES (FOOD) year. 30,000 such conscript laborers were employed by the state in 1921-22.
