Carroll (CHARLES the last surviving)

CHARLES, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of American Independence, born in Annapolis, Md., Sept. 20, 1737. He studied at Paris, became a member of the Inner Temple at London, returned to his native country in 1764, was elected to Congress in 1775, and, along with the other members, signed the Declaration on Aug. 2 of the following year. In 1804 he his patrimonial estate, where, advanced, he became an object of universal veneration. He survived by six years all the other signers of the Declaration, and died in Baltimore, Nov. 14, 1832.
