the green coloring matter found in the leaves of most plants, and sometimes in parts of their stems as well, to which is due the inesin parts of their stems as well, to which is due the inestimable ability, possessed by green plants alone in all nature, to convert the carfarm bon dioxide and water of the air and soil into carbohydrates (sugar, starches, etc.), on which all animal life is ultimately dependent. Its action is not yet fully understood. It may function in part as a catalyzing agent, facilitating the chemical reactions which are known to take place in its presence under the influence of sunlight, or it may act in other ways to make the energy of the sunlight effective. Sunlight is in all cases necessary to its action, and it is found as a rule only in the parts of leaves directly exposed to such light.
Before the fall of the leaf in autumn and during the autumnal coloring, it is transferred to other parts of the plant to be kept in storage for the following CHINA, 1922. The war between Generals Chang-Tso-lin and Wu Pei fu ended victoriously for the latter in a battle fought near Peking, May, 1922.
General Chang retreated to his province of Manchuria, but continued to threaten the peace of the country. President Hsu- Shih-Chang resigned his office June 2, and an effort was made by General Wu Pei-fu to induce President Sun-Yat-Sen of the Canton government to lay down his office at the same time, reuniting China under the restored Parliament of 1917, with former President Li Yuan- Hung also restored. Li Yuan-Hung became provisional President on June 10th and at once offered the Premiership to the veteran statesman Wu Ting Fang, Dr. Sun's acting minister of foreign affairs, who, however, died suddenly , suddenly June 23rd. Dr. Sun himself, refusing to make peace, first lost Canton to one of his own rebel generals and was afterward defeated and fled to Shanghai. The old Parliament of 1917 was convened August 1, 1922, after a five-year interregnum, and proposals were made looking to the permanent reunion and reconciliation of North and South China.
A program of reconstruction, issued by Dr. Sun from Shanghai, received the support of Gen. Wu Pei-fu, now dominant in the northern government, while many spring. Chlorophyll is absent or deficient in most saprophytic ("rotten") plants and in the so-called parasitic plants which live on others. Chemically it is a complex, colloidal substance, among its constituents being nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen, carbon, iron, and magnesium.
It is used commercially as a coloring matter, being obtained for this purpose by distillation processes.
