Collect
a name given to certain brief and comprehensive prayers, found in all liturgies and public devotional offices. The origin of the term is not certain; according to some, it is from these prayers being said in the congregation or collection of the people. They are of great antiquity, and occur in the sacramentary of Gelasius, patriarch of Rome, A. D. 494.
