Dongola
a province of Anglo- Egyptian Soudan, within the region formerly known as Nubia. Its surface is generally level and fertile and large quantities of wheat and dates are grown for export. The capital of the province is New Dongola on the west bank of the Nile.
Old Dongola on the east bank of the Nile, about 75 miles above, was formerly an important town, but is now no more than a village. The province has railroad connection with Egypt, Khartum, and the Red Sea by a line opened in 1906. Pop. about 60,000.
