Eliot (SAMUEL an American educator)

SAMUEL, an American educator and historian; born in Boston, Mass., Dec. 22, 1821. He filled the chair of history and political science in Trinity College, Hartford, Conn. (1856-1864); was president of Trinity College (1860- 1864); and overseer of Harvard (1866- 1872). Among his publications are: "The History of Liberty" (1853); "The Liberty of Rome" (1849); "Life and Times of Savonarola" (1856); "Manual of United States History Between the Years 1492 and 1850" (revised ed., 1873); and "Stories from the Arabian Nights" (1879). He died in Beverly, Mass., Sept. 14, 1898.
