Forecastle
a short deck placed in front of a ship above the upper deck.
It is generally terminated at each end, in ships of war, by a breastwork, the foremast part reaching to the beak-head, and the after portion reaching to the fore-chains. This part of a ship used to be very much elevated in former times, for the accommodation of archers and cross-bowmen; whence the term forecastle.
