Hilmi Pasha

HUSSEIN, a Turkish official. He held the position of Governor-General of Adana and of Yemen, and was then appointed inspector-general of the Macedonian vilayets. Under the "Young Turk" movement he became in 1908 Minister of the Interior, Grand Vizier in 1909, and Minister of Interior in 1913. He served for a time as Ambassador to Austria and later as inspector-general of the Syrian vilayets. He was in opposition to the Germanophile sympathies of his colleagues and in general favored British interests wherever possible.
