Hilo
a town in the Hawaiian Islands, on Hilo Bay, on the eastern coast of the island of Hawaii. In size and importance it is the second city on the islands. It has a court house, a customhouse, a library, and other public buildings. Its protected harbor has excellent facilities for shipping. There are many American residents. Pop. (1910) 6,745; (1920) 10,431.
HILPRECHT (hil'precht), HERMAN VOLRATH, an American educator; born in Germany, July 28, 1859; was graduated at the Ducal Gymnasium, Bernburg, Germany, in 1880; also studied at the University of Leipsic in 1880-1885; became professor of Assyrian and Comparative Semitic Philology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1886. He is a leading authority in cuneiform palæography, having made extensive explorations in Asia Minor, Syria, and Babylonia.
Has published works in archæology, history, philology. "Oldest Version of the Babylonian Deluge, Story" (1910).
