Marigold
a name of several composite plants. The common marigold (Calendula officinalis) is a native of France and of the more S. parts of Europe. It is an annual, from one to two feet high, with large deep-yellow flowers. A number of species of this genus are indigenous to the Cape of Good Hope.
The so-called African marigold and French marigold, common in flower borders, are both Mexican species, and have brilliant flowers. T They belong to the genus Tagetes. The corn marigold is Chrysanthemum segetum; the fig marigold is a Mesembryanthemum , the marsh marigold is Caltha palustris.
